The use of a trust can be traced as far back as the 12^th century. During the time of the crusades, landowners that left England to fight were known to convey ownership of their lands to another person for safekeeping. During their absence the crusader would trust the holder of the lands to manage the estate and pay and receive feudal dues.  The understanding was that as soon as the knight returned his lands would be transferred back to him.   Over many years the trust as we know it today has evolved into a safe and secure instrument used in estate planning to ensure that the planner’s interests are protected. A trust can effectively be applied to reduce estate duty, protect moveable and fixed property from risk and ensure a long lasting legacy for your heirs. A trust should form an integral part of every prudent planner’s estate.
